Springville Playhouse History
Community theater is a fundamental part of Utah's heritage.
Wherever the Mormon pioneers established a colony, a theater
was one of the first public buildings constructed. Wise leaders
recognized then, as they do now, that theater is not just entertainment,
but can be used to convey important messages, preach sermons,
motivate audiences to action and even lift spirits. The marvelous
release from outside cares is a delightful by-product.
Additionally, true community theater provides an artistic
outlet for its participants. Cast and crew spend hundreds of
hours in service to the theater because it becomes meaningful
and fulfilling in their lives.
The Springville Playhouse has been doing that for more than
50 years, without stopping. That makes us the longest continuously
running community theater group in Utah.
In 1947 a group of your neighbors, some of whom are still
with us, decided to promote and produce drama in Springville.
Their first show, "An Ideal Husband", was staged
a few months later. There have been three or four shows produced
every year since.
